Return to Macroblogging
The past few weeks have convinced me that the big Twitter will soon be completely unusable—functionally unusable because of broken content moderation, literally unusable because of hollowed out infrastructure, or some combination of the two. So now seems like a good time to shift some of my energies away from microblogging and back to macroblogging.
The imminent collapse of Twitter isn't exactly a good thing, but I have to admit that I've been looking forward to severing my dependence on the platform (or having it severed for me). Routine usage has encouraged certain habits of mind that I'm trying to break. I'd like to be a little less glib, a little more thoughtful about what I'm putting out into the world. Taking ideas that were going to be tweets and turning them into (slightly) longer form writing seems like a decent way to reorient in that direction.
It hasn't all been bad. Twitter has been great for my career; I've learned a lot from the people I've followed and even become dear friends with a couple of them. Plus there are the jokes. But on balance it would probably be healthiest if all of us heavy posters started disentangling ourselves.
